Dr. Cornelius J. Sullivan is a board-certified oral and maxillofacial surgeon in Annapolis, Maryland. He provides advanced surgical care for dental implants, wisdom teeth, jaw and facial abnormalities, bone loss, temporomandibular joint disorders, and other conditions affecting the mouth, teeth, jaws, and facial structures.
Education and Oral Surgery Training
Raised in Oradell, New Jersey, Dr. Sullivan earned his Bachelor of Arts in Pre-Medical Studies from Villanova University.
In 1983, he earned his Doctor of Dental Medicine degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine in Philadelphia. After dental school, he completed a one-year internship at the University of Pennsylvania.
Dr. Sullivan subsequently completed his oral and maxillofacial surgery residency at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh. His hospital-based specialty training included experience treating patients at a Level I trauma center.
After completing his residency, Dr. Sullivan entered private practice in Burlington, Vermont. While there, he also served as an assistant professor in oral and maxillofacial surgery at the University of Vermont. In 1989, he moved to Annapolis and joined Dr. Clifford Walzer in practice.
Board Certification and Implant Dentistry Credentials
Dr. Sullivan became board certified by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in 1989. Board certification reflects the completion of specialty education and a comprehensive examination process covering the full scope of oral and maxillofacial surgery.
He has also achieved Diplomate status with the International Congress of Oral Implantologists.
Academic and Professional Leadership
Dr. Sullivan was appointed an assistant professor in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Maryland School of Dentistry. From 1994 through 2014, he served as director of residency training in the surgical placement of dental implants.
Dr. Sullivan and Dr. Walzer founded the Chesapeake Dental Implant Study Club, which provides continuing education seminars for members of the professional dental community.
He is also a past president of the Anne Arundel County Dental Society.
Hospital Leadership
From 1996 through 2007, Dr. Sullivan served as Chief of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Dental Medicine at Anne Arundel Medical Center, now known as Luminis Health Anne Arundel Medical Center. During his tenure, he participated in the hospital’s transition to its current medical campus and facilities.
In 2017, Dr. Sullivan was appointed to the hospital foundation’s board.

Dr. Sullivan’s principal clinical interests include:
- Dental implant surgery and reconstruction
- Computer-guided dental implant surgery
- Corrective jaw surgery and treatment of facial deformities
- Reconstructive bone grafting
- Wisdom teeth removal
- Surgical treatment of TMJ disorders
Community Service and Dental Outreach
Dr. Sullivan is especially proud of helping establish the Stanton Center Dental Outreach Clinic in Annapolis in partnership with the former Anne Arundel Health System. Since its founding in 2005, the clinic has helped provide dental care to underserved adults in the community.
As the clinic’s founding dental director, Dr. Sullivan organized a network of approximately 85 area dentists to volunteer their services. The clinic has provided needed dental treatment to more than 1,000 patients annually.
In recognition of his service, Dr. Sullivan received the Top Physician Hero Award from Anne Arundel Medical Center and was recognized as an Anne Arundel County Medical Professional Champion.
Outside the Office
Dr. Sullivan lives in Annapolis with his wife, Jan. He enjoys racing his Harbor 20 sailboat on the Chesapeake Bay and cycling the backroads of Maryland and other parts of the country.
An avid downhill skier since childhood, Dr. Sullivan also enjoys skiing with his sons, Tyler and Tom.
Dr. Sullivan feels fortunate to practice alongside Drs. Walzer, Hlousek, Jones, Chambers and Kufta while serving the oral health needs of the greater Annapolis community.
