Meet Dr. Sullivan
Raised in Oradell, New Jersey, Dr. Sullivan graduated from Villanova University receiving a B.A. in Pre-Med. In 1983 Dr. Sullivan received his D.M.D. degree at the University Of Pennsylvania School Of Dental Medicine in Philadelphia. After a one year internship at the University of Pennsylvania, he completed his residency in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, a “Level One” Shock-Trauma Center. Upon completing his residency, Dr. Sullivan entered private practice in Burlington, Vermont where he also served as Assistant Professor in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Vermont. Two cold years later in 1989, Dr. Sullivan joined Dr. Walzer in Annapolis.
Dr. Sullivan is a member of many professional organizations. He became Board Certified by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in 1989. He is one of only 5 Maryland dentists who have achieved diplomate status with the International Congress of Oral Implantology. His special interests include the treatment of patients with dental implants, computer guided implant surgery, surgical correction of jaw and facial deformities, reconstructive bone grafting, removal of wisdom teeth, and microsurgical treatment of TMJ disorders.
Dr. Sullivan was appointed as an assistant Professor at the University of Maryland, Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. At the University of Maryland, he served as the Director of Residency Training in surgical placement of Dental Implants from 1994-2014. He and Dr. Walzer founded the Chesapeake Dental Implant Study Club, which sponsors continuing educational seminars for the professional community. He is past president of the Anne Arundel County Dental Society. From 1996-2007, Dr. Sullivan served as Chief of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Dental Medicine at Anne Arundel Medical Center and is very proud of being part of the transition team to the number one-rated hospital in Maryland and its beautiful state-of-the-art facility. In 2017, he was appointed as a foundation Board member at AAMC.
Dr. Sullivan is most proud of his partnership with Anne Arundel Health Systems in founding the Stanton Center Dental Outreach Clinic in 2005 located in Annapolis. As dental director, he organized 85 area dentists to provide free dental care to the underserved and working poor adult community. The clinic provides needed dental services to over 1000 patients each year. Dr. Sullivan was awarded Top Physician Hero at Anne Arundel Medical Center and the Anne Arundel County Medical Professional Champion.
Dr. Sullivan enjoys his home life with his wife Jan in Annapolis and often can be found on the waters of the Chesapeake Bay racing his J70 sailboat or cycling the backroads of Maryland and the USA. An avid downhill skier since childhood, Dr. Sullivan enjoys skiing the “deep stuff” with his sons Tyler and Tom.
